We have finally secured a small stock of this rare herb!! Mitragyna speciosa is
endemic to Thailand where it is considered illegal. Fortunately there is now a
small-scale plantation outside Thailand which can supply us with limited amounts
of foliage.

In Thailand Mitragyna speciosa is reputed to cure opiate and amphetamine
addiction, unfortunately until now it has been difficult to substantiate this claim
due to the difficulty of obtaining authentic material. There appears to be a lot
of variation among the reports from people who used this plant. Most sources
claim that it acts as a stimulant in low doses and a sedative in larger quantities.
Very few users mentioned an opiate-like effect, many comparing it to stimulants.
Some people apparently enjoy it while others do not.

It's primary alkaloid - mitragynine - has shown some affinity for opiate receptors
in the laboratory. A truly fascinating species - in need of a lot more research -
