The use of this species for sacramental purposes is well-known and has been described by countless authors. It's primary alkaloid Mescaline constitutes the very first "psychedelic" drug known to western society and today is the most widely researched of all such compounds.

Lophophora williamsii is also employed for a large number of medicinal uses, including the treatment of rheumatisms, arthritis, fevers, intestinal disorders, influenza and toothache. Several interesting antibiotic compounds have been reported from this cactus.

Unfortunately the species is seriously endangered in many parts of it's native habitat in great need of cultivation. Growing cactii from seed is actually a quite easy and very rewarding experience, try it yourself! Peyote is highly valued by collectors for it's ornamental value and rarity. Please note that while Peyote contains only negligible amounts of Mescaline until it reaches 10 years or more of age, it's cultivation is currently illegal in many countries.
