The use of Kaugoed among the Hottentots of South Africa has often been alluded to in the literature, unfortunately much of the data is fragmentary and often contradictory. Accurate and detailed research has been undertaken only very recently. All parts of the plant - leaves, stems and roots - are employed in the preparation of Kaugoed. Several traditional techniques exist which serve to reduce the levels of potentially harmful oxalates which are found in Sceletium and other related species.
